Federal Legislation Improving Access to Emergency Medical Services

By Trish Johnson Nov 5, 2024 | 7:58 AM

Efforts to improve healthcare access across Western Minnesota are making headway with new initiatives and legislative support to better serve rural communities. In Wabasso, a partnership between Wabasso Ambulance and Avel eCare enhances emergency services through tele-EMS, allowing patients in ambulances to connect directly with certified physicians, paramedics, and nurses via video. These telemedicine advances are vital in rural areas where travel time to a hospital can be critical.

Recognizing these needs, lawmakers are pushing for more support. A new bill, the Protecting Access to Ground Ambulance Medical Services Act, aims to extend Medicare payment support for rural ambulance services by three years, helping ensure these essential services remain accessible. Additionally, the Equitable Community Access to Pharmacist Services Act, also cosponsored by district representatives, would expand Medicare coverage for pharmacist services, including vaccinations, infectious disease testing, and chronic condition management, making it easier for seniors to access care.

As a reminder, Medicare Open Enrollment is underway until December 7, allowing seniors to review and update their prescription drug plans or Medicare coverage by visiting medicare.gov or calling 1-800-MEDICARE.
