This Week’s Update with the MN DNR

By Trish Johnson Oct 22, 2024 | 6:55 AM
  1. **Distinguishing White-Tailed Deer from Elk**: The Minnesota DNR reminds hunters to familiarize themselves with the differences between white-tailed deer and elk, as elk sightings have been reported outside their usual areas. The DNR’s website offers visual guides and traits to help hunters correctly identify each species and provides an online tool for reporting elk sightings.

  1. **Deer Hunters Invited to Share Wildlife Observations**: Minnesota deer hunters can contribute to wildlife population data by reporting their observations using the DNR’s online log. This tool allows hunters to log wildlife sightings, including deer, turkeys, and other species, and contribute to valuable population trend data.

  1. **Pheasant and Deer Hunting Tips**: Upcoming DNR webinars focus on pheasant hunting as winter approaches and top deer hunting tips. The pheasant hunting webinar on October 23 features insights from a Pheasants Forever biologist, while the October 30 webinar covers deer hunting tips ranging from scouting to field dressing.

  1. **Cold Water Safety**: As temperatures drop, the DNR urges hunters, anglers, and paddlers to take extra precautions on the water. Cold water can be dangerous, and wearing a life jacket is crucial. The DNR offers additional safety tips, such as distributing weight evenly on watercraft and carrying a communication device.

  1. **Zebra Mussels Confirmed in Lakes**: The DNR confirmed the presence of zebra mussels in Clear Lake (Washington County) and Potato Lake (Hubbard County). Residents are encouraged to check boats and equipment when removing them from the water for the season to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
