“Guarenteed Income for Artists

Oct 22, 2024 | 7:17 AM

Springboard for the Arts, a Minnesota-based nonprofit, has announced the expansion of its **Guaranteed Income for Artists** program, which will now provide $500 monthly payments to 100 artists over a five-year period. Initially launched in 2021, the program aims to address the financial instability faced by artists, particularly those working in the gig economy, where income can be unpredictable.

This expansion marks one of the longest-running guaranteed income programs for artists in the U.S., supporting 50 artists in rural Otter Tail County and another 50 in St. Paul’s Frogtown and Rondo neighborhoods. Along with the no-strings-attached payments, the program also offers “wrap-around” support services, such as financial counseling, housing guidance, and student loan debt assistance. The goal is to provide artists with the financial security needed to focus on their creative work and build long-term economic stability.

Since its inception, the program has demonstrated positive outcomes, with participants reporting improved financial planning, debt reduction, and even homeownership. The initiative is part of a broader movement advocating for guaranteed income as a tool to foster economic justice and community resilience. The success of the program could inspire future policy changes that extend beyond artists to broader populations in need of financial support.
