Zebra Mussels Invade AGAIN!

Oct 11, 2024 | 8:13 AM

Well, we went almost one full week without a Zebra Muscle situation popping up in a MN Lake.  In Rice Lake, Hennepin County, zebra mussels have been confirmed, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Two property owners reported finding zebra mussels attached to settlement samplers, and DNR staff discovered additional mussels on nearby rocks. These invasive species can cause significant ecological and economic damage by clogging water intakes and harming native aquatic life.

Minnesota law requires all watercraft users to take steps to prevent the spread of invasive species, including cleaning and draining boats and equipment, and properly disposing of bait. The DNR offers free decontamination stations to help reduce the spread. Residents are encouraged to report any suspected sightings of zebra mussels to the DNR.
