**Federal Government Shutdown Averted, but Short-Term Fix Sets Stage for December Battle**

Sep 27, 2024 | 6:55 AM

In a last-minute move, Congress passed a short-term spending bill, preventing a federal government shutdown that was set to start this past Monday. This temporary fix ensures funding through December 20th, but it leaves us facing another potential government shutdown just before the holidays. The bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), passed with bipartisan support, though Minnesota Representatives Brad Finstad (R-1st District) and Michelle Fischbach (R-7th District) voted against it.

Finstad expressed his frustration, saying the CR doesn’t address the underlying issues, continuing to fund the government at last year’s spending levels. He criticized the bill for not allowing Republicans the opportunity to make adjustments or cut spending. “This short-term extension is irresponsible,” Finstad stated, highlighting a sentiment shared by many conservatives in rural Minnesota. These budget battles could have significant impacts on programs critical to our area, from agricultural subsidies to infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Democrats like Rep. Betty McCollum (D-4th District) voted in favor of the bill but are equally frustrated with the short-term solution. McCollum said, “Passing CR after CR is no way to fund our government.” Local constituents, especially farmers and small business owners, will likely feel the pressure as uncertainty looms around federal funding allocations.

With another government funding showdown set for just before Christmas, residents in Detroit Lakes and surrounding communities should prepare for potential service disruptions or funding delays that could affect everything from agriculture programs to healthcare support.
