Fargo Parking Garages Display 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Sep 12, 2024 | 7:38 AM

Fargo parking garages are set to display signs promoting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, an initiative led by the Cass Clay County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Research from the International Parking and Mobility Institute (IPMI) revealed that over 50% of parking organizations have experienced suicides or attempts at their facilities. Parking garages are often high-risk locations for impulsive acts, which makes this initiative crucial. The signs, funded by the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, are provided at no cost to local parking facilities.

This effort follows national trends, where cities like Charlotte, NC, have seen success with similar signage, reducing incidents in locations where the signs were posted. The coalition aims to expand the project to other high-risk areas, such as bridges and overpasses. September being National Suicide Prevention Month, the campaign highlights the importance of mental health support, encouraging those in crisis to call 988, a lifeline available 24/7.
