### Part 1: Charges Dismissed in Hatchet Attack Case

By Trish Johnson Aug 21, 2024 | 6:24 AM

In recent courtroom proceedings, felony charges of second-degree assault and fifth-degree assault against Tyrel Traverse Ambuehl, 38, of Mahnomen, have been dismissed. Ambuehl was previously accused of attacking a man with a hatchet taped to his arm. The incident allegedly took place on October 15, 2023, in rural Becker County, where Ambuehl reportedly struck the victim multiple times with the weapon.

According to court records, White Earth police responded to the scene, and both the victim and a witness provided consistent accounts of the assault. Despite these testimonies, the Becker County Attorney’s Office decided on June 24 to dismiss the charges, citing the need to resolve another pending case involving Ambuehl before proceeding. The state reserves the right to refile the charges within the statute of limitations.
