Minnesota is currently experiencing a significant surge in pertussis cases, commonly known as whooping cough, with patients ranging in age from one month to 86 years old. The increase is particularly notable among adolescents.
As of Thursday, there have been 516 reported cases of pertussis across the state, with Hennepin County leading with 178 cases. Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse emphasized the severity of the infection, stating that the characteristic “whoop” sound follows intense coughing spells where patients struggle to catch their breath. This rise in cases is concerning, especially in a population that is generally well-vaccinated.
Health officials urge anyone with a persistent cough lasting more than seven days, or those who have been in close contact with a known case, to see their doctor immediately.
The Minnesota Department of Health continues to monitor the situation closely and is advising the public to remain vigilant, especially as the number of cases continues to climb.
