Over 200,000 long-term care workers in Minnesota may be eligible for bonuses of up to $1,000, thanks to the Minnesota Care Force Incentive program. This initiative, funded with $84 million approved in 2023, aims to recognize the essential work of direct support professionals who assist individuals with disabilities, aging residents, and children with autism.
These workers, often known as personal care assistants or nursing home staff, play a vital role in helping people with daily activities such as bathing, eating, and mobility. The bonus payments are set to be distributed in early 2025 through eligible organizations.
Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead emphasized the importance of this workforce, stating, “These payments recognize our direct support workforce and how much we value their work.” The Minnesota Department of Human Services will begin accepting applications from employers on August 15th, with the application period closing on September 30th. The exact bonus amounts will be determined based on the number of applications received.
This program is a significant step in addressing workforce challenges and showing appreciation for those who provide essential care to some of Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents.
