New Blood Tests for Alzheimer’s Diagnosis Available

Aug 5, 2024 | 8:04 AM

Exciting news in the medical world as a new generation of blood tests promises to revolutionize the way doctors diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s disease. These tests offer a fast and easy method for physicians to determine whether patients showing symptoms of cognitive decline have the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s.

These brain changes must be identified before doctors can prescribe two recently approved drugs that can slow down the progression of the disease. As demand for these drugs increases, these blood tests could play a crucial role in identifying patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s who would benefit from treatment.

However, the rapid development of these tests has left many physicians without guidance on which patients to test or how to interpret the results. Experts discussed this issue at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Philadelphia, emphasizing the need for clinical practice guidelines.

These blood tests detect the presence of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s, which previously required uncomfortable or costly procedures like spinal taps or PET scans. Now, tests focusing on the protein ptau217 are showing high accuracy and becoming more common.

Although none of these tests have FDA approval yet, they are gaining popularity among doctors and patients. Experts believe this marks the beginning of a new era in Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment, with primary care doctors playing a critical role.
