A powerful storm hit the Detroit Lakes area yesterday afternoon (July 30th) causing significant disruptions and damage. The storm, which began around 3:00 PM, brought heavy rainfall, high winds, and lightning strikes, resulting in widespread outages and extensive property damage.
Impact Details:
- Major Outages: Businesses such as Walmart, Webber Motors, and Menards experienced complete outages, losing electricity, phone, and internet services. A transformer struck by lightning caused a loud explosion, startling employees and leading to extensive power cuts.
- Wind and Rain: The storm brought wind gusts up to 60 mph and over an inch of rain, causing minor flooding and knocking down trees and power lines across the area.
Significant Damage:
- High School: The east side of the storage seating at the high school sustained damage.
- Residential Areas: Numerous trees fell on houses on Pickerel by Cotton, causing considerable damage to homes.
- Budget Host Inn: The Budget Host Inn suffered major damage to its roof, with portions of the roof blown off by strong winds. Crews were working to remove debris from the roadway and ditch. The damage was extensive, and construction crews were sealing the roof gaps with tarps.
- Sandbar II: Across Highway 10, Sandbar II also suffered extensive roof damage and announced on Facebook that it would be closed for the day due to the storm.
Frazee Incident: In Frazee, sirens were heard as a large pole barn was blown across Highway 10, blocking traffic and requiring emergency services to clear the roadway and ensure safety.
Community Response: Local authorities and utility companies worked to quickly to restore power, clear debris, and ensure the safety of residents. Power restoration efforts are ongoing, and crews are addressing downed power lines and damaged infrastructure.
