Becker County Considers Regional Park at Toad Mountain

By Trish Johnson Jul 25, 2024 | 7:00 AM

On a recent episode of Hodge Podge with Joel & Trish, Steve Skoog of Becker County Environmental Services discussed the potential development of a regional park at Toad Mountain. This unique opportunity involves the county purchasing 253 acres of woods and meadows, including 920 feet of shoreline on Toad Lake, for about $250,000. The total value of the land is assessed at approximately $1.3 million.

### Property Features and Historical Significance

Toad Mountain is one of the tallest points in Becker County, offering spectacular views and established trails. The site also includes buildings from its days as a horse-riding camp, adding historical value to the property.

### Funding and Grants

The Trust for Public Land has signed a purchase agreement for $2.5 million with the current owner, Susan Carr. However, the deal is contingent on Becker County securing several grants, including:

– Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission grant for up to $1.5 million.

– Minnesota DNR Natural and Scenic Areas Grant for $500,000, with a 50% match requirement.

– Federal Community Forests Grant for $600,000, also requiring a 50% non-federal match.

If these grants are not obtained, the county will have to abandon the project.

### Community Involvement and Open House

Skoog highlighted that there is an open house scheduled for later in August, where the public can view the potential park layout and provide input. This feedback is crucial as there has been significant opposition from local residents concerned about the cost and impact on the neighborhood.

### Potential Park Activities

If the park is developed, it would likely be used for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and possibly horseback riding. Motorized vehicles and boats are not expected to be allowed, preserving the natural tranquility of the area.

### Public Opinion and Next Steps

The Becker County Board is moving cautiously, emphasizing the need for a master design plan before proceeding. This plan will ensure the project’s feasibility and garner public support. The master plan process includes park and trail design, cost-effectiveness recommendations, and extensive community involvement.

An online survey and an informational booth at the upcoming Becker County Fair will further gather public opinion on the Toad Mountain Park proposal.

For more details and updates, residents are encouraged to attend the open house and participate in the upcoming survey.
