U.S. Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, along with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), have announced new funding to improve school-based health services in Minnesota. This initiative aims to provide essential healthcare services to children in schools, leveraging Medicaid and CHIP.

The funding, from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, will support services such as preventive medicine, mental health care, and disease management. Providing care at school reduces transportation issues, stigma, and missed school time.

Senator Smith stated, “This initiative removes barriers to access and promotes health equity.” Senator Klobuchar added, “This grant allows schools to provide more convenient and accessible support.”

MDE Commissioner Mueller and DHS Commissioner Harpstead emphasized the role of schools in supporting young people, particularly in mental and behavioral health. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid awarded these funds to enhance services, especially in rural and underserved areas.

This expansion ensures all Minnesota students have access to the health care they need to succeed.
