Busy, Busy, Busy Weekend in DL

This weekend in the Detroit Lakes area is packed with exciting events for all ages and interests. On Saturday, July 13, the 88th Northwest Water Carnival continues with a variety of activities, including citywide garage sales, the Tour de Lakes bike ride in honor of Mark Knutson at 9 a.m., and the Detroit Lakes EAA 1498 Fly-In, Drive-In Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at the Detroit Lakes-Becker County Airport.

 

Join the Stop that Stigma Remembrance Walk starting at 11 a.m. in front of the Detroit Lakes Pavilion, and don’t miss the Water Carnival Demolition Derby and Automotive Barrel Racing at the Becker County Fairgrounds starting at 6 p.m. For a full schedule and registration details, visit dljaycees.com/water-carnival.

 

In addition to the Water Carnival, the Lakes Area Mountain Bike Alliance and Trails (LAMBAT) will host a free “Learn to Mountain Bike” event at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, starting at 9 a.m. This event is open to all interested in learning to ride.

 

The Becker County Museum will host a rosemaling class with artist Dorothy Hoover from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., where participants can learn to decorate a 10-inch flat plate using oil paints. The class costs $43 for museum members and $45 for non-members, and pre-registration is required. Sign up at beckercountymhistory.org/store.

 

For camping enthusiasts, Scheel’s Sports experts will be at Maplewood State Park’s Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a “Camping 101” class. This free event will cover camping types, gear, cooking, sleeping options, and staying comfortable. Participants will learn fire-starting, sample instant meals, make camp treats, and have a chance to win prizes. Pre-register at facebook.com/FriendsofMaplewoodStatePark to secure your spot.

Hosted by the Friends of Tamarac, this event is great for all ages. The cost is $40, which includes all materials. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. ### Tamarac Sunday Movie

Enjoy a free screening of the nature-themed movie “Super Hummingbirds” at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
