Minnesota has reported its first case of H5N1 avian influenza in a dairy herd in Benton County. Over the weekend, a few cows showed signs of fever, which quickly spread to more than 40 cows. The virus was confirmed by the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the USDA. State Veterinarian Dr. Brian Hoefs emphasized the importance of testing sick cows to prevent future infections.
Dairy farmers are advised to monitor their herds and follow biosecurity measures, such as isolating sick cows and keeping feed and water sources secure. The risk to the public is low, but those in contact with infected animals should wear PPE. For more details, visit the Minnesota Board of Animal Health’s website.
