The Detroit Lakes Park Board recently held their monthly meeting, discussing several important topics and upcoming projects. A major highlight was the proposal for a new skateboard park. The current park is deteriorating costing between $300,000 and $500,000, aims to revitalize it. Potential grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation could cover up to 25% of the costs. The board also recommended a 12-month lease agreement for Ortenstone Gardens. This space will be used for community recreation and public art displays. Mark Champa updated the board on the city’s Bicycle Friendly Community Application, noting that while infrastructure has improved, educational programs like the Bike Rodeo have ceased, impacting the city’s rating.
Craig Caulfield reported on the fundraising efforts for new pickleball courts at Peoples Park. With $100,000 raised, the board approved proceeding with the project in phases as funds become available. On the Pavilion/City Park Project the plan is to develop a year-round event center for up to 500 people, pending an archaeological study and SHPO review. Repairs at Washington Ballpark are nearly complete, with eight out of ten lights fixed. The remaining two should be done soon, requiring a 120’ lift at a cost of $4,000. Other updates included the Arts and Culture Commission seeking locations for sculptures, a $6,000 irrigation project at South Shore Park, and progress on signage for Area C at South Shore
Park. Arbor Day was celebrated with the planting of three apple trees at the Boys and Girls Club, and recent vandalism on McKinley Blvd resulted in $2,000 in damages. The Park Board will reconvene tomorrow at 7am to continue discussions and address ongoing projects.
