Tribal Member Protest near Strawberry Lake

(DL-Online) – Law enforcement was called to a logging site near Strawberry Lake in Becker County after White Earth tribal members protested the operations. Hodgden Logging won the bid to harvest various types of wood but left due to safety concerns when tribal members arrived, demanding they leave.  The site, located within Becker County and White Earth Reservation borders, saw a confrontation between the loggers and tribal members, including White Earth Tribal Council members. Environmental activist Winona LaDuke praised the loggers’ departure on social media. Tribal members expressed concerns about cultural artifacts and tree cutting, particularly maple trees. While no arrests were made and no injuries occurred, tensions were high until the logging company decided to cease operations.  Becker County holds annual timber sales, often on tax-forfeited land within reservation boundaries. Loggers must follow permits approved by the County Board, ensuring compliance with regulations and safety standards. This incident adds to ongoing disagreements between the White Earth Tribe and Becker County, including disputes over water jurisdiction and forest land transfer bills.
