The Detroit Lakes Development Authority vote has unanimously agreed to change on the interest rate on business loans from the current rate of interest to match the market rate of primary lenders. The Development Authority’s Façade Improvement Grant Program will be used for maintenance, upkeep and remodeling of business building exteriors in the downtown corridor. The change in this program essentially increases the maximum amount a business could borrow for construction on facades while also changing the percentage of a project the grant would cover. This favors the smaller business owners while also increasing the maximum amount that would favor large businesses. In consideration of how funding can keep the buildings looking aesthetically pleasing. An architect can create multiple renderings of downtown buildings that business owners can consider for their facades. Remmen suggested hiring an architect to create several renderings of downtown buildings. He explained that should a shop owner want to spruce up the building, the drawings could provide options. Incentives to utilize the renderings could also be provided through grant funding amounts. Possibly working with other groups in Detroit Lakes to cover the cost of hiring an architect will be on next month’s agenda which will include time for citizen questions and comments.
