The Detroit Lakes Public School District is pleased to announce its first-ever Laker Ripple Award. The award was established to recognize outstanding achievements, endeavors, leadership and character of distinction of school alumni. 101-year-old Eloise Irving, class of 1940, is the inaugural winner. Honored for the ripples she’s made in the community. She’s served on many local organizations while running her own unique store Shady Hollow Flea Market. She and her husband Bob “Irv” Irving were active in local politics, although in opposite parties. They were known for hosting notable MN politicians like Walter Mondale and Hubert. H. Humphrey. Her nominator, Terry Kalil said Eloise has “…an unending supply of colorful stories about her life and good times. She’s a living legend in pink cowboy boots.” A special Laker Ripper award presentation where Irving will present a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior for the volunteer work they have accomplished to demonstrate the Lake Rippler Effect in action with a 1940 Laker alumnus who made has made significant ripples in the community impacting a future 2024 Laker who is just starting to make ripples of their own.” The combination award and scholarship ceremony will be May 6th at 6:30pm at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse in the Detroit Lakes high school.
