MANKATO, Minn – During the demolition of an old high school in Minnesota, a demolition crew made an unexpected discovery – a time capsule dating back to 1920. The capsule was opened on Monday, and its contents were revealed to the community during a press conference.
Owatonna High School Principal Cory Kath described the moment as special for everyone involved, noting the excitement of preserving and sharing history. Inside the capsule, newspapers, financial statements, rosters of city organizations, coins, and more were found, all remarkably well-preserved. Mary Larson, an alumna of Owatonna High School, emphasized the importance of using these artifacts to educate younger generations about history.
Jennifer Thiele, the executive director of the Steele County Historical Society, highlighted the significance of such discoveries in understanding local history. The Steele County Historical Society is partnering with the school’s museum to preserve and share some of the time capsule’s contents, ensuring that this piece of history continues to educate and inspire for years to come.
