CLOQUET, Minn. – Gordy’s Hi-Hat in Cloquet, Minnesota, is more than just a roadside diner. It’s a slice of Americana, serving up nostalgia along with its classic American dishes. The restaurant, known for its 50s-style ambiance, has been a staple in the community since 1960 when Gordon and Marilyn Lundquist opened its doors. Named after the big white hats chefs wear, Gordy’s quickly became famous for its hand-pattied hamburgers, homemade onion rings, and freshly blended shakes. Today, the third generation of Lundquists runs the business, with Sever Lundquist at the helm. Despite the recent passing of his grandparents, Gordy and Marilyn, who worked at the restaurant well into their 90s, Sever is committed to preserving their legacy.

“We try not to change anything because they never changed anything, you know? Worked for 65 years,” said Sever. The restaurant has become a local institution, attracting customers from all over, including Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange, a Cloquet native, who once went unnoticed while ordering at the counter. Despite the loss of his grandparents, Sever finds solace in the restaurant’s loyal customers, many of whom have become like family over the years. “Our goal is just to make sure that we maintain these relationships with customers from all around the country that have come here and hopefully build off that too,” said Sever.

As Gordy’s Hi-Hat enters a new chapter, the Lundquist family remains dedicated to carrying on the tradition of good food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere that has made Gordy’s a beloved destination for generations.
