NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. – As legislation to ban TikTok gains momentum in the U.S. Senate over national security concerns, some Minnesotans are raising objections, emphasizing the platform’s crucial role in their livelihoods. Jen Shaffer, known as The Formidable Genealogist, credits TikTok for the success of her genealogy business, which she established for better work-life balance after becoming a mother. The New Brighton mom expressed concerns about the potential ban, fearing it would severely impact her ability to connect with clients and support her family.
Shaffer highlighted the significant growth of her business through TikTok, with hundreds of clients and a waiting list, all of whom she reaches through the platform. She emphasized that TikTok has enabled her to turn her passion into a lucrative career, doubling her previous salary and allowing her to work from home. Amidst growing apprehension among business owners, Shaffer has reached out to Minnesota Senators Klobuchar and Smith, urging them to consider the implications of a TikTok ban on small businesses and families. She emphasized the need for a balanced approach that acknowledges the platform’s positive impact alongside security concerns.
