Minnesota’s recent proposal to transfer 155,000 acres of land back to the White Earth Tribe has sparked controversy, particularly among outdoor enthusiasts. Todd Simison, a landowner in Becker and Clearwater counties affected by the legislation, expressed surprise at the proposal, questioning the need for change after so many years.
Greg Scherzer, a White Earth Nation descendant, voiced concerns about tribal land ownership, citing instances where land was reclaimed but restricted to tribal use only. White Earth Tribe Chairman Michael Fairbanks clarified that the tribe’s intention is to ensure all Minnesotans can continue to enjoy the beauty of the White Earth State Forest.
Despite these assurances, some, like Simison, worry that the legislation could create division rather than unity. The bill has been tabled for now. Similar proposals have been made regarding land around Upper Red Lake and the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, following the recent return of land to the Upper Sioux Community.
