Moorhead celebrated a long-awaited milestone as officials gathered for the groundbreaking of the 11th Street underpass project, a plan that has been in development since the 1970s. The project will construct two underpasses, allowing 11th Street to pass under the BNSF rail lines in downtown Moorhead, improving traffic flow and connectivity between the north and south areas of the city.
Senator Amy Klobuchar highlighted the significance of this achievement, noting that the project’s completion will support Moorhead’s growth and enhance infrastructure for the next century. The underpasses will not only facilitate traffic but also enhance public safety by eliminating two dangerous at-grade crossings.
Funding for the project, which had been a significant hurdle, is now secure with a mix of state and federal support. Governor Tim Walz praised the community’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of the project’s impact on safety and growth. Construction is set to begin next week and is expected to be completed in 2026, following a phased approach.
