State Capitol Pushes for Minnesota as Prime Movie Location

Efforts are underway at the Minnesota State Capitol to boost the state’s appeal to filmmakers, citing iconic films like “Grumpy Old Men,” “Mallrats,” and “Fargo” that were shot in the region during the 90s. Rep. Liz Lee of St. Paul spearheads this initiative, aiming to establish a dedicated state office within Explore Minnesota. The proposed office would promote Minnesota as a premier destination for film production, aligning with the state’s existing tourism promotion efforts.

According to Lee, this move is crucial for Minnesota’s economic growth and competitiveness, ensuring the state remains on par with neighboring states in attracting film projects. Currently, Minnesota is unique in relying on a nonprofit, the Minnesota Film and TV Board, to perform the functions typically handled by official state film commissions in other states. Advocates argue that creating an official film office under Explore Minnesota would streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

Moreover, the proposed Explore Minnesota Film Office would oversee the $25 million in tax incentives earmarked by state lawmakers to entice film and TV productions to Minnesota, a fund that was expanded in the previous legislative session. Supporters believe that formalizing Minnesota’s film promotion efforts is long overdue and will better protect the state’s investment in the industry. The bill has already received a hearing in the House, with sponsors aiming to include it in a broader economic development package later in the session.
