The Minnesota legislature passed a bipartisan bill providing guidance on the use of force for school resource officers (SROs). The bill addresses concerns raised by police departments regarding ambiguous language in the education bill passed last session, which led to the suspension of many SRO programs. Initially on a fast track for passage, the bill was delayed due to Republican concerns about being left out of discussions. After amendments and a conference committee, the original language was restored. The bill directs funding for SRO training, outlines their duties, and requires the development of a model policy by the Police Officer Standards and Training Board. Governor signed the bill into law late Thursday afternoon.
