The Laker girls basketball team ended their season on Thursday night in the Section 8AAA quarterfinals, losing to the Little Falls Flyers 45-44. The Lakers were seeded fourth and the Flyers were seeded fifth entering the playoffs. The game was closely matched throughout, with the seeds reflecting the scoreline. At halftime, the Lakers led 22-19, with senior Helena Daggett leading the way for the team with six points. Daggett finished the game as the Lakers’ top scorer with 12 points. The second half continued to be a low-scoring affair, with Detroit Lakes maintaining their lead throughout. With the score tied at 42-42, the Lakers took the lead with just 10 seconds left on the clock, thanks to a basket from Elle Bettcher. However, the Flyers responded with a timeout and an inbound play that led to a three-pointer from senior Haylee Fredregill with 4.9 seconds left to play. The Lakers then lost possession on the inbound play, and were forced to foul. With little time remaining, they were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer. The Flyers move on to the section semifinals, where they will face the top-seeded Alexandria Cardinals on Saturday afternoon, with tipoff scheduled for 1 pm. The Lakers see their season end as they finish their campaign with an overall record of 13-14. The Lakers will lose four starters to graduation: Helena Daggett, Ella Okeson, Brooklyn Markuson, and Elle Bettcher.
