Grass fire along I-94 near Rothsay

Fire fighters worked to put out flames along Interstate-94 east of Moorhead after something sparked a grass fire. The Rothsay Fire Department responded to mile marker 42 around noon on Thursday, February 29. Flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from the ditch. A large area of grass on the side of the interstate was scorched, but the Rothsay Fire Department was able to get the fire out without assistance from other departments. Otter Tail County officials said minimal smoke was crossing the interstate, so traffic was not interrupted. The Minnesota DNR says wildfire season is here earlier than usual. With warmer temperatures and little snow this winter, they say the potential for wildfires and grass fires will be high this year. The DNR adds that over 90% of wildfires are human-caused, so it’s important to use caution with equipment or vehicles that can cause a spark, obtain permits if you plan to burn vegetation or debris, and check any recent burning for lingering heat.
