Girls Hockey: Thief River Falls ends Detroit Lakes in section quarterfinals
The youthful Laker girls’ hockey team ended their season on Thursday night in the Section 8A quarterfinals at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Lakers lost to the Prowlers 4-0. With the win, Thief River Falls advances to the section semifinals on Saturday, where they will play against the #1 seeded Warroad Warriors. The Prowlers scored on the powerplay at the 12:20 mark of the first period when Quinnlyn Kenfield shot from the point, beating Laker goalie Talyn Anderson through the five-hole. Despite a relatively equal second period, TRF scored two more goals in the second period, with Parker Olsonawski scoring the first goal at the 14:45 mark, followed by Lila Dalager scoring at the 14:55 mark, just ten seconds apart. Thief River Falls secured their win with another goal in the third period when Kali Knutson scored at the 5:58 mark. DL’s Talyn Anderson managed to make 28 saves, while Mckenna Carr of Thief River Falls earned a shutout, stopping eight shots in the victory. The Lakers will say goodbye to two seniors from this year’s varsity team, Haley Stattelman and Hannah Larson. Going into the offseason, the Lakers will return a number of starters for next year’s team. One of the biggest questions is whether or not interim coach Gretchen Norby will take the position on a permanent basis after stepping in during the middle of the season.
