ST PAUL, Minn. — The murder trial of a Fergus Falls man began Wednesday, February 7th. Matthew P. Ecker, 44, of Fergus Falls, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 32-year-old Alexandra L. Pennig of St. Paul. He originally reported she shot herself in the head. Jury selection began Wednesday and is going to continue into Thursday. Second-degree murder with intent is a felony and has a maximum prison sentence of 40 years. Officers found the body of Pennig in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to the left side of her head and “her left hand on top of the gun,” according to the court documents. Ecker said she walked backwards to the bathroom and told Ecker not to come any closer or she would pull the trigger. Ecker said she shot herself “two seconds” after she closed the bathroom door.
