Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
The Laker boys’ hockey team fell on the road to the East Grand Forks Green Wave on Tuesday night 5-1. The Green Wave proved why they are ranked in the top five in the state according to the rankings on the website ‘Let’s Play Hockey.’ Entering play on Tuesday, the Green Wave was ranked number four in the state.
Despite entering play as the heavy underdogs, the Lakers had an excellent start to the game. In the first minute, a would-be goal was waved off due to the net being off. The disallowed goal took some wind out of their sails, but they dug down and kept the pressure on East Grand Forks. EGF finally broke through on Laker goalie Kale Witt when Brock Schultz, the Green Wave’s leading scorer, scored with under four minutes remaining in the period.
Witt played stellar throughout the night, and in the second period, the Green Wave brought a relentless attack. The Lakers played in their defensive zone throughout much of the middle period. Schultz scored his second goal with 13:42 left in the second. Detroit Lakes cut the deficit in half when the Laker’s opportunistic third line found the back of the net. DL’s Keifer Lundmark scored his fourth goal of the season to make the score 2-1 with 9:41 left in the 2nd. Less than four minutes later, the Green Wave stretched their lead back to two when Schultz scored his third goal of the game. The Green Wave made it 4-1 in the final minute when Landon Jamieson scored a powerplay goal for the Green Wave, and Brock Schultz got the assist on the Jamieson goal. Schultz finished the game with three goals and one assist.
The third period saw more big saves from Laker goalie Kale Witt, but Detroit Lakes could not find any more offense. The Green Wave scored an insurance goal to make it 5-1 in the third period and shut the door on any Laker comeback hopes.
The loss drops the Lakers record to 8-6 overall, and they have now lost back-to-back games. DL lost to Warroad this past Saturday 4-1, and they have now dropped to 2-4 in section games this season.
The Lakers will have a chance to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon when they host Princeton. The game will face off at 2 pm, and you can listen to all the action on KDLM.
