South Point Apartment project breaks ground in New York Mills

Officials broke ground for the South Point Apartment project in New York Mills last Thursday.

Once completed in the winter of 2024, the project will provide 60, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and developers hope the project will address the housing shortages in the area.

New York Mills City Clerk, Julie Roberts, expressed her excitement for the project.

Roberts said: “We feel very lucky to see this project move forward and have a developer partner that wants to make this investment in our community because we do have a housing shortage. The South Point Apartments will provide another type of housing for residents in our community.”

Court documents in the case of a Minot woman accused of using anti-freeze to poison her long-time boyfriend say she expected to inherit more than $30 million upon his death.

MN DNR urges hunters to be extra cautious after 2 hunters injured during youth hunting opener

With the Minnesota deer rifle opener set for Saturday, the MN Department of Natural Resources urges hunters to be extra cautious.

Earlier this month, in separate incidents, two men were accidentally shot by inexperienced hunters during the youth hunting opener.

The men suffered non-life threatening injuries, but it’s a reminder that accidents are preventable.

MN DNR Conservation Officer Hannah Wood said hunting accidents happen almost every year and the agency aims to help hunters know how to be safe to avoid those accidents.

Wood is a former firearms safety instructor and said hunters of all ages can make mistakes if they’re not careful.

Wood said: “Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded. You want to control the muzzle, so don’t point it at anything you aren’t intending to kill. Keeping your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.”

Between 2021 and 2022, there were 13 hunting accidents and one fatality in Minnesota, which prompted at least one change.

Hunters are already required to wear blaze orange, but beginning this year their blinds will have to have blaze orange as well.

The DNR also said to make sure your gun is unloaded when you are traveling in a vehicle or on an ATV.

The MN DNR currently have 4,000 firearms safety instructors in the state but are always looking for more.

If anyone is interested in becoming a firearms safety instructor, more information can be found on the MN DNR’s website.

New underpass in Moorhead set to decrease firefighter response time

A new underpass set for construction on 11th Street in Moorhead next year and city firefighters said the project will improve their response time.

The underpass will run under two busy railroad tracks that can hold up firefighters when they are dispatched to an emergency.

Moorhead Fire Chief Jeff Wallin said the underpass will be go north and south on 11th St. from where Hornbacher’s is on the south side to about where the fire station is on the north side.

Wallin said: “One of the problems we’ve had at the fire department is long delays when we’ve got trains crossing the tracks to get to the south side of town from our station one and so this underpass project is really going to eliminate those delays when somebody is suffering a life threatening emergency or fire.”

The fire dept. will also have to make significant changes to its station doors, which will be moved from the south side of the building to the northside.

Wallin also said the 3-year project is going to cause some delays when firefighters are dispatched during the construction period due to the detours and realigning their station doors,

The underpass redesign is projected to cost over $100 million and construction on the underpass is scheduled to begin next year.
