Boys and Girl’s Club of Detroit Lakes to cut ribbon on new playground next week

Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – The Boys and Girl’s Club of Detroit Lakes is cutting the ribbon on their new $730,000 playground on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

The invite-only event will be held at Lyle Crovisier Memorial Park at the Boys and Girl’s Club off Richwood Road and about 100 afterschool Boys and Girl’s Club kids will be the first ones to try-out the new equipment during the event.

Pat Petermann, executive director of the Club, said the installers still have a couple more things to finish and they are hoping to have the barrier fence up by next Wednesday, but it’s not lost on him how excited the kids are to try out the facility’s new playground.

“It’s almost done,” said Petermann. “There are a few parts that they are waiting on to make sure it’s safe to be on in the coming week. So it won’t be open until we do the official ribbon cutting and they get all the pieces in place. The fence is going up yet, so we’ve got some work to do on that. If weather holds out, the plan is to open this thing next Wednesday and we’re all excited.”

He said they wanted to make sure everyone was able to access each piece of equipment on the new playground and opted for more agility-style items, but they also a few standard swings for playground traditionalists.

“The Wee-go-round, which is accessible to anybody, looks really cool,” said Petermann. “The balancing and agility stuff is kinda neat. The musical chimes and the other instruments that are on the side of the fence look pretty cool … there’s just a lot of room on this thing to run around, but also play on all the pieces of the playground that are in place.”

The city of Detroit Lakes contributed $175,000 toward the playground installation that included $50,000 in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

The playground will be the city’s second on Detroit Lakes’ northside with the other installed at Roosevelt Elementary.

The Boys and Girl’s Club completed the playground construction in about 3 months.

The playground will be open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 7.

DL man charged with felony threats from incident at Detroit Country Club

A Detroit Lakes man has been charged with making felony threats of violence at Detroit Country Club in August.

According to court records, on Aug. 9, Becker County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance at the golf course where they encountered 40-year-old Nicholas Lorin Bromeling of Detroit Lakes.

Witnesses said Bromeling stopped at the golf course and told a supervisor that he was upset with golfers parking in his driveway.

The supervisor said Bromeling’s behavior is erratic and known to the country club.

After the supervisor told him he needed help and to leave the property, Bromeling then threatened to fight the supervisor and said he was going to burn down their house.

Bromeling then returned to his residence and, according to another emergency call from a neighbor, began hitting golf balls towards golfers across the street while yelling and using vulgar language.

A deputy then interviewed Bromeling who confirmed he had spoken to the golf course supervisor and that he was agitated when he was told to “get help”. He also admitted to threatening the supervisor with burning down their house.

He was arrested and posted a $1,000 cash bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 2.

ND Native American group suing Washington Commanders to reinstate ‘redskin’ nickname primarily based in Virginia

Despite claims to the contrary in a newly-filed federal lawsuit, the group challenging the NFL’s Washington Commanders football team is not incorporated in the state of North Dakota.

The Native American Guardian’s Association’s (NAGA) suit against the football team, its leadership and another Native American nonprofit hinges on defamation and civil rights claims that the defendants called NAGA a “fake group” and worked together to “indirectly” attack Native Americans and “attack NAGA’s integrity.”

The federal complaint filed Monday states multiple times that NAGA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, “duly incorporated in North Dakota.”

However, according to the North Dakota Secretary of State’s office, NAGA’s status in North Dakota has been “inactive – involuntary” since 2017.

NAGA was filed only as a trade name for another North Dakota nonprofit group called Oyesna Corporation in 2015. The Oyesna Corporation is listed as “not in good standing” with the state and its status has also been “inactive-involuntary” since 2017.

A spokesperson for NAGA says the group is actually incorporated in Virginia but claims it is still headquartered in North Dakota. NAGA has six directors on its board. Only one, NAGA’s president Eunice Davidson, is a North Dakota resident.

The group’s registered agent is based in Virginia.

NAGA championed a petition in August that demanded the team’s new owners change the Commanders’ nickname back to Redskins which has collected nearly 133,000 signatures.

At the end of August, Commanders President Jason Wright told reporters that a return to the former nickname is, quote, “not being considered. Period.”
