2 seriously injured in separate rollover crashes on Interstate 94 in Otter Tail County

Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Two people suffered serious injuries during a two-vehicle crash involving a van and trailer and a semi-tractor trailer in Otter Tail County on Monday morning.

On Sept. 11 at 1:52 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a report of the crash at mile marker 64 on Interstate 94 in Tumuli Township.

A preliminary crash report indicates a 2002 Ford Van with a trailer, driven by 35-year-old Joseph Daniel Auala of North Chesterfield, Va., was westbound when it was struck by an unknown vehicle causing leave the roadway and rollover in the ditch.

During the rollover, the trailer detached from the vehicle and remained in the roadway where it was struck by a westbound 2016 Frieghtliner Tractor, driven by 33-year-old Yahye Isse Ali of Barron, Wisc. The Frieghtliner left the roadway and also rolled over in a ditch.

Both drivers suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment.

A passenger in the Ford Van did not report any injuries at the scene of the crash.

All three vehicle occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crashes and law enforcement believes alcohol did not factor into the incident.

Wadena woman injured in crash with horse and buggy near Staples

A Wadena woman was injured is a vehicle crash involving a horse and buggy on Highway 10 Sunday night.

On Sept. 10 at 10:34 p.m., a 2005 Dodge Caravan, driven by 26-year-old Brittany Marie Buckholder of Wadena, was eastbound on Highway 10 when it collided with a westbound horse and buggy carriage, driven by 18-year-old Daniel Yoder of Verndale, at the Central Street intersection in Aldrich, Minn., about 10 miles west of Staples.

Buckholder suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Lakewood Hospital for treatment.

Neither Yoder nor his two 17-year-old female passengers in the horse and buggy reported any injuries at the scene of the crash.

Buckholder was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and law enforcement believes alcohol did not play a role in the incident.

Fergus Falls woman arrested on felony drug charges

33-year-old Fergus Falls woman was arrested and awaiting multiple felony drug charges following the execution of a search warrant at a Fergus Falls residence on Sept. 5.

According to court records, 33-year-old Dilfa Munguia was the target of a four month investigation by the Fergus Falls Police Department concerning illicit drug sales at a residence on the 700 block of Riverside Court.

Investigators received a tip about illicit drug activities at the residence in April 2023 and opened an investigation into the matter.

They observed a suspiciously high number of vehicles going to and from her address. According to law enforcement, over a two day span, 25 vehicles were seen stopping at the residence.

Law enforcement also received her social media messages as part of the investigation, which included multiple conversations about selling controlled substances or requesting her to do so.

She also invited some of the people in those conversations to come to her home; allegedly hinting that drug transactions were going to take place on the premises. 

During a search of Munguia’s residence, officers discovered 23.6 grams of methamphetamine in a plastic bag along with more than $4,000 in cash. They also found Munguia’s personal items in the bedroom where the drugs were found. Suboxone strips, a small scale, miscellaneous drug paraphernalia and a bag full of small plastic baggies were also found at the scene.

2 arrested after discovery of 1,300 fentanyl pills in Moorhead

Police say two 23-year-olds from Moorhead were arrested Wednesday after a search warrant discovered 1,300 M-30 fentanyl pills with a street value of about $13,000.

According to Moorhead Police, Zachery Roberson and Amy Mendez face drug and child endangerment charges.

While conducting the warrant, two children were present and Clay County Social Services was notified.

Officers say more than $2,700 in cash was in the vicinity of the drugs.

Roberson and Mendez both face felony drugs charges and gross-misdemeanor charges for child endangerment.

Detroit Lakes city council to vote on new 5-year capital improvement plan; special assessment changes

The city of Detroit Lakes will be holding a public hearing for a new 5-year capital improvement plan during their regular meeting on Tuesday evening.

The plan includes two major changes. First, surface street improvements on future alley work will become assessable to abutting property owners along the alleyway.

Second, future reconstruction projects that include sewer and water main replacements will become 100% covered by the city’s public utilities funds. Previously, home owners were assessed for 75% of the cost for the main replacements.

City officials said they hope the changes will keep future road work assessments more manageable for property owners while spreading the costs of the assessments across public utilities’ customer base with only minimal rate increases.

6 people injured in Saturday van rollover on Interstate 94

Six people from Laredo, Texas were injured in a single-vehicle rollover Wilkin County on Saturday afternoon.

According to the state patrol, a 2006 Chevrolet Van, driven by 23-year-old Jose Luis Ramos was eastbound on Interstate 94 at mile marker 31 when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over in a nearby ditch.

Ramos suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the crash, however, two occupants of the van 22-year-old Adam Riley Bueno and 60-year-old Ramon Lara, both of Lerado, Texas, suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to Sanford Hospital in Fargo for treatment.

Three other vehicle occupants in the van also reported non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported to the hospital.

Only two of the eight vehicle occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and law enforcement believes alcohol did not play a role in the incident.

Fog sealing begins Wednesday morning for Detroit Lakes parking areas near downtown

Detroit Lakes will be fog sealing parking areas along Veteran’s Memorial Parkway beginning Wednesday morning.

Beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 6 a.m., parking areas will be closed at Lakes Liquor, the EV charging area and the area around the Jimmy John’s drive-thru.

The alleyway behind Roasted and Price’s Jewelry will also be closed during this time.

The following day, Thursday, Sept. 14, the rest of the parking lot east of Washington Avenue will be fog sealed, including parking spaces in front of Jimmy John’s and Masterpiece Alternatives.

On Friday at 6 a.m., parking areas along Veteran’s Memorial Parkways will be closed for fog sealing, along with the remaining parking areas in the downtown parking lot east of Washington Avenue.

Detroit Lakes Public Works encourages drivers to move their vehicles during the parking closures to prevent damage to their vehicles from the fog sealing process. Adding, the city will not be responsible for damaged or towed vehicles during the closures.

Striping of the newly fog sealed parking areas will commence on Monday, September 18.

2 people and a dog escape mobile home fire south of Fargo

Two people and a dog are safe after escaping a mobile home fire in south Fargo.

Crews were called out around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to 4500 block of San Juan Drive South.

Firefighters found a fire blazing in the rear of the structure and quickly put it out, however, the house suffered significant fire and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under an active investigation and the American Red Cross is offering assistance to those displaced.
