Detroit Lakes, Minn (KDLM) – 1,053 runners took to the streets of Detroit Lakes on Saturday for the 28th annual Dick Beardsley Races. Races began at 8:00 with runners taking part in the 25K, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids races.
Beardsley, who made a name for himself in the 1980s with record finishes in the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, a victory in the inaugural London Marathon in 1981 and a second-place finish in the legendary Duel in the Sun Boston Marathon in 1982, ran the half-marathon on Saturday in honor of race director Mark Knutson, who was killed in a bicycle accident last July.
“Mark was a dear friend of mine for more than 20 years,” Beardsley told the crowd of runners before the race began. “I shouldn’t even be running the half-marathon today, but I’m going to in honor and memory of Mark. And if I finish in under two-and-a-half hours I’ll be tickled pink!”
The 67-year-old Beardsley accomplished his goal of finishing the race in under two and a half hours, completing the half marathon in two hours and twenty minutes.
Bemjamin Pitkin of Bismark won the 25K race with a time of 1:50:16. Craig Isakson of Audubon finished third.
Jake Januszewski of Pelican Rapids won the half-marathon with a time of 1:13:09. Heidi Greenwood of Fargo won the female half-marathon with a time of 1:23:24. Laura Januszewski of Pelican Rapids was second in the female group.
Jeremiah Ulschmid of Detroit Lakes won the 10K with a time of 37:46. Peyton Nordby of Detroit Lakes was fourth, and Marc Reynolds of Perham was ninth.
Dan Johnson of Detroit Lakes won the 5K with a 19:36. Avery Nordby of Detroit Lakes was third, Dave Thomas of Detroit Lakes was sixth, and Maz Easton of Detroit Lakes was ninth. Sadie Rohrich of Fergus Falls took 10th place overall and was the second female runner across the finish line, behind Carlee Sieben of Fargo.
