Staples, Minn (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Lakers Cross Country teams opened the 2023 season in Staples at the Central Minnesota River Run and came away with a pair of fifth-place finishes.
Sophomore Natalie Mohr paced the Laker girls with a seventh-place finish with a time of 22:04.99. Junior Karlie Skarie finished in 23rd place with a 24:71.11, junior Isla Pender was 32nd (26:20.42), and junior Lila Kallstrom was 36th (27:0174). Staples-Motley sophomore Audrey Brownell won the race with a time of 19:10.30.
On the boys side, senior Braydon Francis was the first Laker to finish the race, coming in eighth place with a time of 18:00.16. Senior Micah Barberg was 27th (20:11.75), sophomore Peyton Malecka was 31st (21:11.30), and senior Ben Sundby was 33rd (21:26.69). Park Rapids senior Noah Huot won the race with a time of 16:30.
Next up for the Lakers: their only home meet of the season at the Lakeview Golf Course on Thursday, September 7th at 4:30. The Lakers will host Alexandria, East Grand Forks, Fergus Falls, Frazee, Horace, Shanley, Thief River Falls, and WF Cheney Middle.
