Detroit Lakes Girls Golf Finishes Fourth At State Tournament; Knoop Places In Top Ten

(KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Girls Golf team finished their season at the State Tournament on Wednesday with a fourth-place finish at the Class AAA tournament.

The Lakers carded a two-day total of 653 (333/320), 28-strokes behind state champ Maple Grove, and only five shots behind third-place Minnetonka for a podium finish.

Junior Hanna Knoop led the way for the Lakers, tying for tenth with a 76/77/154.  Sophomore Sydney Miller (86/78/164) and junior Laura Syltie (82/82/164) tied for 35th place overall. Freshman Tatum Gatheridge carded an 89/83/172, good for a tie for 54th place, to finish as the fourth scorer for the Lakers. Seventh grader Sophie Christianson was right behind Gatheridge with an 89/84/173 over the two days. She tied for 57th. Eighth-grader Jaycie Sliper shot a 99/100/199 in the tournament for an 85th-place finish.

With no seniors on the team, the Lakers will return all six State golfers to the team next season when they drop down to Class AA with section realignment scheduled for the fall. The Laker girls golf team moved up to Class AAA for the 2020-21 season.

OTHER STATE GOLF NOTES:

In Class AA, Section 8 champion Park Rapids finished in fourth place at the state meet in Jordan with a two-day 708, 57 strokes behind state champion Pequot Lakes (651). Sophie Cook of Hawley finished as Class AA runner-up by carding a 75/73/148, three shots behind Grace Petzold of Providence Academy. Anna Eckmann of Park Rapids finished fourth overall with a 154, and Annika Jyrkas of Fergus Falls finished tied for fifth with a 156. Madysen Maninga of Park Rapids finished tied for 11th (159), Mallory Uselman of Staples-Motley (Uselman attends Verndale High School, which co-ops with Staples-Motley for golf) finished tied for 18th (164), Annie Meyer of Fergus Falls tied for 29th (170), and Addicyn Zimmerman of Perham tied for 54th with a 186).

In Class AA boys, Carter White of Staples-Motley won the individual state tournament with an even-par 144. White is a sophomore at Verndale High School, which co-ops with Staples-Motley for golf. Jack Justesen of Hawley shot a two-day 155 to finish tied for 24th place, Nolan Eckman of Park Rapids tied for 40th (159), Riley McGovern of Fergus Falls tied for 69th with a 172, and Brady Petznick of Pelican Rapids tied for 83rd with a 179.
