Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM) – West Lake Drive between Washington Avenue to Rossman Avenue in Detroit Lakes will be closed on Wednesday evening from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. for one of the city’s most colorful and classic reasons.

The first of four summer Detroit Lakes Cruise Nights is set to showcase hundreds of classic cars along the shores of Detroit Lake on a quarter-mile stretch of the roadway.

Carrie Johnston, president of the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, said the DL Cruise Nights are a huge draw for people from across the west-central region of Minnesota for a great night of chrome along the beach.

“Our car enthusiasts come from, really, a 100 mile radius,” said Johnston. “They are coming from car clubs in the Fargo-Moorhead area. We have people coming from Ada and Twin Valley. We have summer folks, who are maybe just here for the season, getting that car out of the garage, so we really see people from all over bringing their cars, and then those that just like to come look at the cars.”

The parked classics will be along West Lake Drive from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

But, the lakeside classic car showcase won’t be the only chamber event nearby on Wednesday.

The Women’s Edge Speakers series kicks off their first event in the afternoon at the City Park bandshell from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature Renee Rongen, an author, humorist and business consultant, who will be discussing taking a “leap” into each person’s unique purpose.

“She is just really somebody that gets you thinking and gets you really appreciating life,” said Johnston. “I think that’s really one of my take-aways from her. She is just ready to get you to think, but also enjoy.”

The Women’s Edge Speakers Series event will begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the City Park bandshell. Tickets for the series are $125 and include all three events, but individual tickets for each event will be available on site.

DL Cruise Night is free to attend and will also be held three more times throughout the summer on July 12, Aug. 9, and Sept. 13.
