Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – Minnesota veterans and active duty service members can apply for special state tax exemption programs through the state’s department of revenue.

In a video posted to YouTube, the state tax agency listed a variety of programs offered to current and former service members designed to reduce their income and property tax liability.

“This is one of the many ways (Minnesota) honors the service of military members who call Minnesota home,” stated the video’s narrator. “If you are a veteran of the U.S. military, include the national guard and reserves, you may qualify for the credit for past military service. It is a tax credit of up to $750  for your past service. That’s a dollar-for-dollar reduction of any tax amount owed.”

In addition to the past credit for military service, former service members who collect a pension or other retirement benefits may qualify for the Minnesota Income Tax Subtraction, if their benefits are taxed at the federal level and computed under the title 10 program.

Veterans who own homesteads and hold a 70% service-connected disability rating or higher may also qualify for property tax reductions.

Any veterans wanting property tax benefits must filed their applications at the county assessor’s office.
