LITTLE FALLS, MINN (KDLM) – The Laker Softball team entered the playoffs as the number six seed and matched up with the number three-seeded Little Falls Flyers. The Lakers and the Flyers had met in the last game of the regular season, with the Flyers winning 13-3. The Flyers once again succeeded against the Lakers in the Section 8AAA playoffs on Tuesday afternoon, with the Flyers beating the Lakers 15-0.
The Flyers scored in every inning, and the mercy rule was applied in the 4th inning. The Flyers scored one run in the first inning, five in the second, four in the third, and plated five runs in the fourth.
Offensively, the Lakers could only muster three hits against starting pitcher Korrin Gwost. Gwost went four innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out four Laker batters.
The Flyer offense recorded 11 hits in the winning effort and took advantage of four Laker errors. DL’s Sidney Borgmann started the game pitching for the Lakers and was pulled in the third inning. Megan Stalberger and Ruby Kasowski also had a turn pitching, but the Flyers continued to have success at the plate. Gwost was also successful on offense for the Flyers as she went 2-3 with a walk and drove in 3 runners.
The Flyers improved their overall record this season to 6-15 and advance to the next round of the playoffs, where they will match up against Sauk Rapids-Rice on Thursday at 4 pm. In their only previous meeting, Sauk Rapids beat Little Falls during the regular season 6-3.
The loss drops DL’s overall record to 3-17. Detroit Lakes is still in the tournament and will look to stave off elimination on Thursday night when they take on the loser of Rocori and Alexandria. DL’s next game will be played at 6 pm at Rocori High School.
On the other side of the bracket, Willmar lost to Alexandria 4-3 on Tuesday. Rocori and Sauk Rapids-Rice both had first-round byes to begin the playoffs.
