Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office is adding a second K-9 unit to the department’s roster.
In a May 19 social media post, the office announced they will be adding the Belgian Malinois/German Shepard mix to serve primarily as a locator, but will also be trained to apprehend suspects.
The sheriff’s office also said the new K-9 will be trained in narcotics detection.
The cost of the new K-9 unit will come from State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds and also fund from the American Rescue Plan Act, which will cover equipment for the unit and the 12 weeks of training for the dog and handler.
The new K-9 unit is expected to be ready to report for duty in June.
