Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – An Ottertail couple was charged with 24 tax-related felonies and six additional gross misdemeanors stemming from a Minnesota Department of Revenue investigation.
According to the state agency, Richard Paul Fletcher and Julie Ann Fletcher both failed to pay income tax and filed false or fraudulent returns for five years between 2016 to 2021.
The agency also alleges the couple failed to pay business taxes and file sales taxes returns for their business, Loon Promotions LLC, during the same period.
According to court records, the Fletchers falsely claimed North Dakota residency, while living year-round in Minnesota, to take advantage of the neighboring states lower tax rate.
The agency says the couple owes more than $97,000 in taxes, penalties and interest.
Each tax-related felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
