MMA fighter killed in two-vehicle crash on Interstate 94; fighter was scheduled to fight at Kent Freeman Arena on May 20

Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – A Breckenridge woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 at the Red River Bridge on Sunday, according to a Minnesota State Patrol news release.

On May 7 at 11:29 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a report of a crash on the eastbound lane of the highway.

A Chevrolet Malibu reportedly had reportedly made contact with a Jeep Cherokee while traveling in the same direction on Interstate 94.

Airbags deployed during the crash in both vehicles.

21-year-old Shalie Dawn Lipp was a passenger in the Chevy Malibu and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the crash report, Lipp was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Lipp was listed as a featured MMA fighter for the upcoming No Mercy 11 event at the Kent Freeman Arena on May 20.

The Chevy Malibu was driven by 31-year-old Joseph Vital Trottier of West Fargo, N.D. The Jeep Cherokee was driven by 63-year-old Michael John Duea of Savage, Minn. and included two other passengers.

No other injuries were reported at the scene.

According to the crash report, alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash and the road conditions were dry.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Agencies that responded to the scene included: Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Moorhead Police Department, Fargo Police Department and North Dakota State Patrol.
