Detroit Lakes, Minn. (KDLM) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued a red flag warning for Becker County and 19 other counties in northwest and west-central Minnesota on May 1.
The agency will not issue any open burn permits for yard waste or brush until the warning is lifted, according to DNR staff.
High winds, low moisture and dry grasslands can cause fire to spread rapidly during this time of year, which is part of the reason the agency issued to burning restrictions.
Burning restrictions for central Minnesota counties are expected to take effect on May 3.
The counties included in the red flag warning include:
- Becker County
- Beltrami County
- Cass County
- Clay County
- Clearwater County
- Crow Wing County
- Grant County
- Hubbard County
- Kittson County
- Lake of the Woods County
- Mahnomen County
- Marshall County
- Norman County
- Otter Tail County
- Pennington County
- Polk County
- Red Lake County
- Roseau County
- Wadena County
- Wilkin County
