Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – As if Detroit Lakes residents needed another reason to be excited for the return of baseball this summer.
On Tuesday night, the Detroit Lakes City Council approved a proposal by the Detroit Lakes Ligers (formerly the Detroit Lakes Baseball Club) amateur baseball team to create ‘Food Truck Alley’ at all 13 Liger home games this season.
The approval allows up to three food trucks to park on Langford Street from Washington Ave to Lincoln Ave one hour prior to all home games and two hours following the first pitch.
“As you know, town ball is huge in Minnesota,” Detroit Lakes mayor Matt Brenk said on KDLM Hodge Podge on Tuesday. “I’m so happy that we’ve got a team back. It’s really going to be great when we have Washington Ballpark done because we’ve got some great plans for that facility.”
The Ligers, now in their second year of existence, joined the Red River Amateur Baseball League in 2022 after the Detroit Lakes Angels disbanded in 2018.
Detroit Lakes expanded its home schedule this year, going from six home games in 2022 to 13 in 2023.
“One of our goals while making the schedule was to have at least one home game a week,” says player-manager Brandon Johnson. “So people could count on one game a week this summer so we can become a part of people’s regular routine.”
If you are interested in having your truck present at Liger games this summer, you can e-mail player-manager Brandon Johnson at detroitlakesbaseballclub@gmail.com.
The Liger season opener is at Dilworth on May 24th. The home opener is May 27th against Vergas. Games are free to attend.
