(KDLM) – A homicide investigation is underway after county highway maintenance workers discovered human remains Tuesday afternoon inside a tote along the shoreline of Mille Lacs Lake, according to authorities.
In a news release, Mille Lacs County Sheriff Kyle Burton said a 21-year-old Isle man arrested Tuesday night on multiple outstanding warrants is a “person of interest” in the case.
Highway workers found the remains around 1:45 p.m.
In an update late Wednesday morning, Burton said investigators worked through the night to “process multiple crime scenes” and search warrants were executed on a trailer in North Kathio Township and an apartment in Isle.
“We have no indication at this point that this was a random act of violence and we believe there to be a connection between our person of interest and our victim,” Burton wrote.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Mille Lacs Tribal Police are assisting with the investigation.
The victim’s identity is expected to be released upon identification from the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
