(KDLM) – Seeding has been released for the 2022-23 MSHSL Boys Basketball Section tournaments, which begin on Monday night.
SECTION 6A: (Defending section champion: Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa) The play-in round of the Section 6A tournament is on Monday night. Henning (25-1) is the top seed in the North side of the bracket, entering the tournament on a 14-game winning streak. Henning’s only loss on the season was a one-point loss to top-ranked Cass Lake-Bena at the Perham Crossover Classic in mid-January. Henning will face the winner of #8 Underwood (10-15) and #9 Rothsay (3-21) on Thursday night. The winner of #7 Breckenridge (3-21) and #10 New York Mills (2-24) will travel to #2 Battle Lake (22-4). #3 Lake Park-Audubon (12-14) will host #6 NCEUH (8-15) and #4 Hillcrest Lutheran (19-7) will play #5 Park Christian (12-13).
#8 Benson (6-18) will face #9 Ortonville (0-25) in the 6A South play-in game. The winner will face defending section champ and 2022 Class A State runner-up Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (22-4). The other matchups in 6A South feature #2 Border West (22-2) vs #7 Brandon-Evansville (6-20), #3 KMS (20-5) vs #6 Ashby (8-16), and #4 Hancock (11-13) vs #5 Parkers Prairie (11-13).
SECTION 8A: (Defending section champion: Sacred Heart) Fosston (22-5) will be the top seed in the East side of the Section 8A bracket. They’ll face the winner of Monday’s play-in matchup between #8 Clearbrook-Gonvick (8-18) and #9 Northome/Kelliher (6-18). The other play-in matchup will feature #7 Mahnomen-Waubun (14-11) and Bagley (2-24). The winner will face #2 Cass Lake-Bena (24-2). #3 Fertile-Beltrami (20-6) will face #6 Win-E-Mac (15-11), and #4 Ada-Borup-West (18-9) will take on #5 Blackduck (15-11).
In 8A West, Sacred Heart (23-4) enters the tournament as the top seed. They’ll await the winner of #8 Climax-Fisher (5-21) and #9 BGMR (3-23). #2 Warren-Alvarado-Oslo (23-3) awaits the winner of #7 Stephen-Argyle Central (8-16) and #10 Lake of the Woods (5-19). #3 Northern Freeze (17-8) will face #6 Kittson County Central (11-12), and #4 Red Lake County (13-13) will take on #5 Goodridge-Grygla (14-12).
SECTION 8AA: (Defending section champion: Perham) With a wire-to-wire win over defending section champion Perham late in the season, the 23-2 Thief River Falls Prowlers locked up the top overall seed in the 8AA tournament. TRF will host #16 Menahga (7-19) when the tournament begins on Thursday night. Perham (21-5) gets the two-seed and will host #15 Roseau (7-19) at The Hive. #3 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (20-6) will play #14 Warroad (9-16), #4 Hawley (15-9) gets #13 Crookston (8-18), #5 Wadena-Deer Creek (19-7) draws #12 Park Rapids (5-21), #6 East Grand Forks (13-11) plays #11 Frazee (7-17), #7 Barnesville (16-8) gets #10 Fergus Falls (6-20), and #8 Red Lake (14-11) will host #9 Pelican Rapids (13-13).
SECTION 8AAA: (Defending section champion: St. Cloud Tech) The 8AAA quarterfinals begin on Tuesday night. #1 Alexandria (21-4) hosts #8 St. Cloud Apollo (0-24), #2 St. Cloud Tech (14-10) will play #6 Willmar (12-14), Detroit Lakes (17-8) gets the number three seed and will host #6 Sauk Rapids-Rice (10-15) at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse at 7:00 on Tuesday night. #4 Rocori (17-9) will host #5 Little Falls (14-12).
SECTION 8AAAA: (Defending section champion: Moorhead) The Moorhead Spuds (18-8) begin their quest to defend their Section 8AAAA title as the two-seed in this year’s tournament. They’ll host #7 Sartell-St. Stephen (7-19) on Tuesday night. Top-seed Buffalo (20-6) will host #8 Rogers (8-18), #3 Brainerd (21-5) will play #6 STMA (8-18), and #4 Elk River (12-13) gets #5 Bemidji (14-12).
