MOORHEAD, MN (KDLM) – The Laker boys basketball team jumped out to an early 16-point lead against the Moorhead Spuds and held on down the stretch beating the Spuds 86-73, on Tuesday night, at Moorhead High School.
The Laker offense got out to a fast start thanks to some superb three-point shooting by Devon Berg, Oliver Quam, and Mason Carrier. The three Laker starters helped their team jump to a 20-4 lead with 9:49 to go in the first half. The Spuds went with an all-senior lineup to start the game to honor the seniors on ‘Senior Night.’ Detroit Lakes continued to connect from long-range in the first half and got production from their bench beyond the arc, with Tyler Bye and Reece Borgman making the most of their chances with three-pointers. The Spuds got back into the game in the first half and took their first lead in the final two minutes. Detroit Lakes answered back in the last two minutes and retook the lead going into halftime with the score 43-39. Mason Carrier led the Lakers in scoring in the first half with 14 points. Devon Berg finished the first half with 12 points.
The Lakers continued to have efficient offense in the second half. Berg continued to connect from long-range, and he finished with 25 points. Moorhead’s Adam Jenkins played well and scored 31 points. The Spuds led briefly in the second half, but Detroit Lakes regained the lead and finished with the victory holding off a late comeback attempt by Moorhead.
The Lakers had lost in their previous meeting to the Spuds 84-58 back on December 29th. Detroit Lakes shot only 37% from the floor in that game and 22% from beyond the arc. Comparatively, the Lakers shot 47% from the floor on Tuesday night and 14-30 from three-point territory. The Lakers also shot 76% from the free throw line on Tuesday to secure their 15th win of the season and first win against Moorhead since 2018.
The loss drops Moorhead’s record to 15-6, and they have now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Detroit Lakes is now 15-7 overall and will return to action on Thursday against Aitkin. The Lakers have now won seven of their last eight games.
