DFL Lawmakers Announcing Legal Sports Betting Proposal

ST. PAUL, MN (KDLM) – DFL lawmakers are announcing their plan to legalize sports betting in Minnesota at 9:30 on Tuesday morning.

Representative Zack Stephenson of Coon Rapids is carrying the bill in the House and Matt Klein of Mendota Heights is the Senate sponsor. Stephenson’s measure last year would have allowed adults to bet on sports through mobile apps or at the tribal casinos in the state.

A Republican proposal from Senator Jeremy Miller of Winona includes Minnesota’s 11 tribes, two horse tracks, and all pro-sports teams could offer sports betting on-site.

“Thirty-six other states and Washington D.C. have now legalized sports betting,” Miller said. “Minnesota’s fallen behind these other states.

The American Gambling Association estimates $16 billion was wagered on the Super Bowl by more than 50 million people.

“The last projection that I’ve seen shows that Minnesota could generate as much as $30 million per year by legalizing sports betting,” added Miller.
