Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The winners of the inaugural Yellowbright Frosty Pen Kids’ Writing Contest have been announced.

Aubrey Johnson, 7, of Fergus Falls, and Kellen Ashmore, 9, of Detroit Lakes were this year’s winners.

Aubrey wrote and illustrated a short story called The Winter Rose, and Kellen wrote a story called Minnesota Kid:

I went to Texas in December and there was no snow in sight! But, back home in Minnesota it was pure white. The ocean was wide open, back home the lakes were frozen. The differences I could see reminded me that I am so happy to be a Minnesota kid.

If I wasn’t a Minnesota kid, winter wouldn’t be the same. My days are filled with ice skating, sledding, snowmobiling, and snowboarding even if the weather is insane! Some days I go ice fishing and even if the fish aren’t biting, I can’t complain. Because my family is still making memories playing card games.

Some people down south would say “Minnesota winters are too harsh and cold.” But, for this Minnesota kid, living in a winter wonderland never gets old.

The Frosty Pens Kids’ Writing Contest encouraged kids between 4-7 and 8-12 to write a story about winter between February 1-14 and submit it for a chance to win gift cards from Bluebird Books, Detroit Mountain, and a goodie basket of art supplies.

Dawn Duncan, the owner of Yellowbright, says that they received 21 entries from kids in Detroit Lakes, Audubon, Rochert, Fergus Falls, and Hawley.
